‘Some people think I’m bonkers’ (youth session)

The thinking behind the idea…

I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about culture recently, and how we, as Christians, we should engage with it. In relation to youthwork I like the imagery used by Graham Cray when he describes culture as the social water in which we all swim. ‘The young people cannot avoid it. They need to understand it so that they can swim in it and not drown in polluted waters’. He describes the youthworkers role as that of providing a sort of ‘social swimming lesson’.

That’s pretty much the thinking behind the youthwork session I ran one Sunday morning. The aim of this time was to enable the young people to start critically reflecting on the themes portrayed in the chart songs they were currently listening to.

The idea…

Needed: print outs of selected chart songs, (possibly the songs to listen to), Bible verses to accompany themes, Bibles.

I asked the young people to read the lyrics/listen to the songs, then answer the following questions:

– What are the themes in this song?

– What worldview does it portray? (I explained what worldview meant obviously)

– What does the Bible say about the themes and worldview in the song? (For my group I had a few Bible verses they could choose to look up, but for older groups you may want to let them come up with them themselves)

– What would you say to someone who believed in the worldview presented in this song?

The songs I used for this session were:

Lili Allen ‘It’s not fair’ Main themes: sex, selfishness, love.

Dizzee Rascal ‘Bonkers’ Main theme: freedom (Bible verses about freedom in Christ Vs the false freedom of worldliness, and also about not conforming to the pattern of the world. We had a really great debate about what the world would look like if everyone had the attitude that Dizzee portrayed in this song)

Michael Jackson ‘Man in the mirror’ Main theme: self improvement, doing well, justice.

La Roux ‘Bulletproof’ – reliance, love, trust (from what I can remember).

But just check out the top 40 (or ask you YP’s what they are listening to) and have a look through some of the lyrics, you will find loads of good themes for people to get their teeth into.

The feedback from the young people was really good for this session; something they want to keep doing in the future as the chart songs change.
